So what is this establishment, anyway?
The x86 Cafe is a community of retrocomputing nerds who share an affection (or just a morbid fascination) for early x86 CPUs and computers. Whether your first love was a patience-testing 8088 or a feisty Pentium, this might be a good place for you.
Since the community is connected to the Fediverse, you can interact with other users the Fediverse out there - whether they are on a Hubzilla instance, Snac2, Mastodon, Pleroma or any of the many other variants.
Everything you create here is subject to Hubzilla's very strong privacy features, so you can choose freely if, how and with whom you want to share your content. You can also manage who you wish to receive content from, hopefully helping create a safe place for you.
And what's on the menu?
What you make of your presence here is very much up to you. You'll have your own channel - or several, if you wish, that represent your identity (or identities) on the Fediverse. You can use them as a microblogging service or as discussion forums of a sort.
Once you're logged in, you can also add "Apps" for various other purposes you may find useful:
- Photos and Galleries for managing pictures and images
- Articles for long-form blogging
- Files for uploading and optionally sharing files (supports WebDAV!)
- Websites for creating your own pages
- Wikis for collecting information on whatever your passion is
- Calendars for organising your life, events, or whatnot
..and several others.
Ok, you had me at 8088. Now what?
Great!. Start by reading the Terms of Service and privacy statement on the Register screen, and complete the registration if they are to your liking. You'll be asked to confirm your e-mail, after which I'll be notified so I can approve your registration.
After you've logged in, spend some time looking around. Hubzilla is incredibly powerful, so it may feel a bit overwhelming at first - but don't fret! There are help pages available in the App menu (top-right of your screen), and I hope to publish more helpful content as the community grows.
Have a good one, and welcome!
