This is officially the first post of what I hope will be a busy place for retrocomputing fans and tinkerers. As the site name suggests, my own main focus is on the x86 family, but do not let that stop you from discussing or creating content about other interesting old architectures!
Why am I doing this?
There are so many places where retrocomputing is going on: Discord, Facebook, Bluesky, and many others. So why do we need yet another place? Because I believe strongly that those corporate, centralised platforms are bad, and that de-centralised, free and open communities are necessary.
I've tinkered and plodded with various Fediverse software over the last few years, and found that it is about time I do something for the community, not just for myself. I have hardware, network, storage and a wee bit of time, so why not?
In short, then: Because I can.
Please get involved!
This site, though, is not running itself. And what you're seeing today, at launch, is not really how I want it to look or feel - but I have neither the skills nor the time to do all the things I would like to do. I would therefore be immensely grateful if you, the community, could help me with some of these things:
- Moderation
- Design (theming)
- Testing and picking features to enable
- Writing documentation
I have some thoughts and ideas about all of these, so if you have time and inspiration to spare, do let me know!
Watch this space!
I'll be updating this post or adding new ones from time to time.
